Our Organizational Goal
The primary purpose and objective of the NYSPOBA is to promote and improve the safety, training and benefits of its membership; to facilitate and cultivate camaraderie and cooperation between the NYSPOBA membership and all Law Enforcement Agencies and Police Organizations, and to enhance the value of Peace Officers within their respective communities.
At one time, New York Criminal Procedure Law did not distinguish the difference between Police Officerand Peace Officer status. Under the 1980 Unified Peace Officer Bill, outlined under Sections 2.10 (Persons designated as peace officers), 2.20 (Power of peace officers), and 2.30 (Training requirements for peace officers) of the Criminal Procedure Law. The passage of this bill made a distinct separation of powers and training for peace officers.
Peace Officers conduct vehicle, bicycle and motorcycle patrol; apprehend and transport suspects and have essentially the same arrest powers as Police Officers. Peace Officers, however, have police powers only within their "Geographical Area of Employment." What this means is that Peace Officers pretty much only have police powers while on duty where they work!
Most Peace Officers also possess and carry weapons, however, some do not...sometimes they do the same job as Police Officers unarmed!
Some examples of peace officers in New York state are FBI Agents, US Secret Service Agents, New York State Corrections Officers, New York City Corrections Officers, MTA Bridge and Tunnel Officers, Constables, Police Constables, State University Public Safety/Security Officers-Community Colleges, Bay Constables, State and Coutny Probation or Parole Officers, Westchester County Deputy Sheriff's, Yonkers Raceway Police, Roosevelt Island Public Safety Officers, Seagate Police, Corrections Officers, SPCA Special Agents or Investigators, Bailiffs, Court Officers, Co-Op City Public Safety Officers, NYC Deputy Sheriff's, NYC Marshals, NYS Mental Health Security, Roosevelt Island Public Safety Officers, NYC Hospital Police, NYC Homeless Services Police, SPCC Agents, Taxi and Limosine Commission Officers, NYC Traffic Officers, NYC Police School Safety Officers, Cord Meyer Public Safety Officers and other NYC Special Policemen.
